Detect Data Anomalies Before Writing a Summary

Write a reusable prompt with replaceable inputs. Submit your prompt and one test output for this example.

Task: Build a prompt that checks a metric extract before summarizing it.

Example input: Fictional daily records with fields date, signups, purchases: June 1: 100, 10; June 2: 110, 11; June 3: 105, 9; June 4: 0, 12; June 5: 108, 130; June 5: 108, 130; June 7: 115, 12. For this exercise, purchases count only purchases by people who signed up on the same date, with at most one counted purchase per person. Expected coverage is June 1 through June 7.

Constraints:

  • Check missing dates, duplicate rows, impossible relationships, and unusually large changes.
  • Do not repair missing or suspicious values by guessing.
  • Separate deterministic rule violations from statistical suspicions.

Required output from your prompt: A validation report, a cautious summary of usable records, and questions for the data owner.

Success checks:

  • June 6 is flagged as missing.
  • The repeated June 5 row is identified.
  • June 4 and June 5 violate the defined purchases-versus-signups rule.
  • No growth claim depends on silently corrected data.
